Have you ever wanted to read a rock? We’re guessing, probably not. But after reading this comic, you may change your mind.

How to Read a Rock: A Graphic Novel on Ocean Science tells us how much scientists have learned about the Earth through scientific ocean drilling. In this process, scientists bring up rocks form under the seafloor to study them.

This is a true story.

Told in the goofiest way possible, of how scientists read rocks from under the seafloor that helped them tell the story of one of the most cataclysmic events of the last 20,000 years! And with thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation – it’s free to download!

Comic Background

This project was the perfect fit for Aducate Digital’s instructional design skills. We worked closely with the incredibly talented (and award-winning!) children’s book author, Kevin Kurtz. Kevin writes nonfiction books about science and nature. Check out his books here!

(This partnership may seem familiar. Last year, we produced another award-winning comic called “Light is Color.”)

“How to Read a Rock: A Graphic Novel on Ocean Science” drew upon research from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). Funding for this project was from the National Science Foundation. The goal was to create a resourcl for students to provide an overview of what and how the IODP has learned about the Earth through ocean drilling – with humor, of course!

Graphic novels are becoming increasingly popular among young readers. They provide a means to reach older students who typically provide outreach challenges for informal science education.

This volume will be the first in a series that reference individual expeditions conducted by IODP while holistically showing what we learn post-expedition. The content in these graphic panels provide the context of what the program has accomplished over the last 50 years.
